My paintings are usually done on location to allow the elements (light, temperature, wind - yuck! -, passers-by) to influence the work and to help stimulate an immediacy in the process. I want a distilled and concise version of a scene, not a record of details. I want to explore the relationships of forms and colors. Hopefully this results in a striking image that provides some insight for the viewer. I use soft pastels, which are made from pure pigments. This provides richness and vibrancy. The pastels are applied to a sanded paper that provides grip and texture.
